It is the study of the function of words (categories of words). Words (also known as lexemes) can be classed into groups dependent on their function in the sentence and purpose. These classes will bring back memories of the good ol' days in primary school. Remember these words: nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.? Will you should. The aforementioned categories are known as word classes or more academically, parts of speech.
Nouns are objects, things, names and all sort of "subject" sort of words. Thereafter, nouns are again divided into smaller groups such as Proper nouns, Abstract nouns and Pronouns.
Verbs are words (doing words) that denote actions (jog), processes (change) or events (boil).
Adjectives are words that describe an action, an object or a thing. They are used to state qualitative features of an object. And example of this is "The hot pot". The word hot describes the temperature of the pot.
Prepositions are word that states/expresses the location of an object. These words are "on, in, out, over".
Conjunctions are words that connect two sentences (either dependent or independent).
Determiners are words that 'determine' what noun should follow. The most common word that is used would be 'the'. It determines (in a noun phrase) the noun that should come after it. "the monkey was shot by a banana".
