Study of the meaning of words and the relationship between the form of a word and its meaning.
Denotation is the definition that you would normally find in a dictionary (not the urban dictionary). The meaning of the word never changes because it is always fixated or associated with the one word.
Connotation are definitions in the author's sense and his views and opinions are placed on it. In other words, a biased opinion on the subject of matter (these words are always subjective). If an elephant was put down due to its negative behaviour, the media would interpret this as "Elephant killed by humans".
